Computer Information

Glenn College has a high speed computer network that provides students access to all online services at La Trobe University, such as lecture notes and the library, but the most popular aspect of our network is that it brings the Internet to every College room.

This page has been created primarily to help you get connected to the Glenn College computer network and the Internet. We aim to make it as painless as possible, but please contact the College Office if you are confused. By bringing your own computer to College and connecting to the network you bring almost limitless resources to your fingertips.

I want the Internet!

  1. Get a computer and an ethernet card. NOT a modem! We recommend a 100Mbit card to maximise network performance. Make sure that the ethernet card has a UTP port and remember that if you get a really cheap one it will perform like a really cheap one – laptop owners take note.
  2. You must have a La Trobe username and password because this is used to give you access the internet. Language students may need to contact the Language centre for this information. Normally the details of your La Trobe account are printed on your enrolment form and any HECS assessment notices. Your account also comes with an email address that can be accessed using an email client such as Outlook Express, or via the web at the Computer Studyhall.
  3. Complete the online form for requesting a network connection in Glenn College. The form is emailed to the office as soon as you press submit.
  4. Pay the $45 connection fee and a minimum deposit of $20 for internet use at the Glenn College Office. The current cost of downloads can be checked at the Netflow page. Sites on the Victorian Regional Network and the local LaTrobe network are free.
  5. Once the form is processed an Internet Connection Assistant will help set things up and record some details about your network settings. Please be patient, it can take a couple of days to process your form during busy periods. You will be loaned a UTP cable which must be returned when you leave.
  6. As a new member of the College network you will be subscribed to the mailing list. The list gives you access to technical support from other residents and notices of changes to network operations. Use it!
  7. The fastest way to get on the net is to do it yourself. For those who want to set their computer up without our help, we have provided all of the necessary information to do so. Links are provided via the online connection form page.
  8. There are many popular Internet programs, game patches, driver upgrades and technical documents in our College archive. The archive is located on the computer called "Glenn_archive" in "Network Neighbourhood". We keep the archive current so that you don't need to pay to download software that everyone uses.

I am ready to APPLY for an Internet Connection. Please read the section 'I want the Internet!' before submitting a connection form. You need to have a few things ready for us before we can help you. You will be connected as soon as possible. Please call the network coordinator if you are kept waiting more than 2 days (x5411).

Can I connect myself? 

Some parts of the setup can be done by anyone who cares to read a few self-help documents. In fact, all of the necessary network details are provided when you are connected and are also available on the Application form. In addition, we have created instructions that are easy to follow and are easy for you to access once your network connection is working. Who can I ask for help?

Glenn's Network administrator is Russell McInnes. Russell coordinates a team of network assistants who are more than willing to try and resolve any problems you might have with your computer or the network. In addition to these people, the College recognises that a great many of its residents are computer literate and we encourage you to ask your friends for help. The Glenn College Technology Club

We consider everybody using the network at Glenn to be informally part of the GCTC, but it is the residents that make an active active contribution that are real members. Who do you think campaigns for network upgrades, suggests improvements to the web page, installs and maintains the archive server, and keeps the Draconian measures ITS has imposed on the Colleges for their Internet access under surveillence? Tech club members of course. Involve yourself and be enlightened.

Tech club initiatives include but are not limited to:

The Glenn College Network

The Internet or World Wide Web as some refer to it hardly needs an introduction these days. Once used only by academics, the military and the privileged few that knew it existed, the web is nowadays hurtling towards immensity like the proverbial snowball.

Glenn College was the first College at LaTrobe to outfit student rooms with ethernet connections to the Web. The infrastructure was completed 1993 I believe. Residential wings are connected back to the office by optic fibre. The hubs and patch panels are located on the second floor of each wing and CAT5 UTP cable runs through to the rooms where there is a port labelled "data". The other port is labelled "voice" and this is for a phone.

At first there were very few students who used the facility. In 1999 however the number of students using the computer network has grown to over a third of the College population. We believe that this is fantastic because computer literacy is dramatically important for today’s graduates and will be even more so for future graduates. Knowing how to use a computer simply puts you in the running, if you know nothing then you are falling behind. It is my opinion that if students are serious about their work and have the means, purchasing their own computer is a logical part of a university degree.

"I’ve bought a computer… now what?" Well if you are connected to the Internet the world’s information is at your fingertips, but help is available to get you started. An enthusiastic team of Internet Connection Assistants is the backbone of the Colleges network expertise, although these guys are not the only residents with the necessary talents. One of the connection assistants will come to your room and set things up as explained in the "I want the Internet!" procedure.

Computer assistance beyond the initial setup is best sought through the mailing list or from the nerd next door. If you are really stuck and if perseverance can be used to describe your efforts at resolving the issue, visit one of the connection assistants. Or visit two. Perhaps invite all four to have a look and watch them fight over who gets the kudos for resolving the problem.
